Drinking lemon water in the morning is an absolute must! I’ve been having a cup of lemon water in the morning off and on for the last three years. Many times I’ve been asked since I originally posted about drinking lemon water if it really works or have I seen any benefits. Yes, I have noticed a difference when I drink warm lemon water and when I don’t have it in my routine.
In my previous post, I listed 10 benefits of drinking warm lemon water but when I started, there were only a few that I was mainly concerned with and hoped would work for me. Over the last few years, I’ve stuck to the routine of drinking 8 to 10 oz. of warm water with one-half of fresh lemon juice. I don’t use bottled lemon juice because it is made from concentrate and doesn’t have the same benefits or taste like freshly squeezed lemon. I use a hand-held juicer like the one from Amazon (aff) that only takes a few seconds to use and I’m good to go.
Enough of my yapping! Here are my top three reasons for drinking warm lemon water:
- Cleanses The System – The main benefit that intrigued me before starting my routine was the assertion that lemons aids in detoxing the body by stimulating the liver and act as a natural diuretic. The first thing that I noticed when I started drinking lemon water was how frequently I had to tinkle. Yes, I said tinkle…don’t judge me. Anywho, I also noticed that it keeps the fluid in my face down. For some reason when I retain water, the first place where the fluid is noticeable is in my face. If I stop drinking lemon water for a bit and notice some water retention, I go back to drinking a cup for a few days and I noticed that the extra water is gone. I prefer this as a natural diuretic over having to take my prescription diuretic. With lemon water, I don’t suffer the side effects and the feelings of being dehydrated. You have not lived unless you’ve had your mouth feel like someone stuffed it with a ton of sand and cotton.
- Aids Digestion – Much like its diuretic effect, lemons also get the digestive system moving. It’s said that the vitamins and minerals in lemons loosen toxins in the digestive tract and relieve symptoms of heartburn and bloating. I can attest to how it helps move things along. I’ve noticed within 30 minutes to 1 hour of drinking lemon water it does, in fact, stimulate bowel movements. For me, this is a plus because I suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If I’m not having a severe bout with constipation, this works like a charm every time. I will say that I noticed the temperature of the water had to be just right, and it truly has to be WARM water.
- Balances pH levels – When I’ve spoken of lemons balancing pH, people normally look at me like I’m crazy because we all know lemons are acidic. However, the acid in lemons does not make the body more acidic…it has the opposite effect and causes the body to become alkaline. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, she was told to eat and drink foods that had an alkalizing effect because diseases cannot survive in an alkaline body. Of course, she didn’t listen but I did…in the last few months, I’ve worked to regulate my body’s pH balance and I’ve noticed that I don’t have the issues that I did before. I honestly believe that drinking lemon water and adding alkaline drops to my water is one of the main reasons why I don’t have the pain that I had before, the stomach issues, my eczema flares don’t happen as often, and my mood is better.
Honestly, I’m all for natural remedies. If you saw the box of medicine I’ve collected that has been prescribed to me, you would be in shock. I’m not a doctor nor am I bashing them but I believe that at times I have been overprescribed medicine. A number of issues I’ve had, I’ve easily treated with natural remedies. Please don’t get me wrong, if you really need what has been prescribed to you, take the dang medicine. LOL, But for minor stuff, I’m all about seeing what I have in my kitchen that will take care of things and get me going in the right direction.
