Return of the Jheri Curl?

Soul Glo Jheri Curl from Coming to America

I’m sorry but I had to include that picture. If you’ve seen “Coming To America”, you get the reference. LOL! The ladies on Black Hair Media are all abuzz over a thread about the return of the juicy juicy, Jheri Curl. I didn’t get one the first time around but my mother had one. I don’t know why because she had curly hair. Smh!

Who misses all that greasy-looking hair? Ring around the collar? Plastic on the furniture to protect it from the curl juice? The hair pick with the spray pump for the juice? I swear the time period when the Jheri Curl was out was some of the best years. Heck, I wish things now were like they were back then. It was seriously less stressful and more fun.

Anywho, someone said it is making a comeback out west in Cali. However, there are a number of people in other places that are rocking Jheri Curls.

Jheri Curl – Wave Nouveau | Then vs. Now

The difference between then and now is the overall look. The ladies who have curls now are mainly going with a Wave Nouveau to give them a wavy look. I loved the way the Wave Nouveau looked back in the day. Plus, it is more versatile because you can flat iron your hair without damage. Michael Jackson was the KING of the Wave Nouveau!!!

Another difference, ladies rocking a Jheri Curl now are using larger rollers. The curls now look more natural and ladies are using less product. You have probably seen someone with a Jheri Curl and not even realized it because doesn’t have the look of yesteryear. It’s a looser drier curl that looks more like naturally curly hair.

Now if you feel bold and daring, there are resources available to help you care for your hair. If you do decide to give a Jheri Curl a try, please be sure to properly research hair care and products. I have seen some people report having damaged their hair from not properly caring for it or using the wrong products.

I have recently gotten a Jheri Curl, after being Natural for 4yrs. I must say I Absolutely LOVE IT! Easy to manage and I do All kinds of Styles with my hair! I use no drip activator and Olive Oil Moisturizer! My hair look Soooo Natural! Everyone says this can’t be a Curl! I have people wanting to go back to the Curl! I’m just saying it’s less work and I no longer have take 6hrs to do my hair! Best Decision I’ve made!

I have it on now and tbh it works for me. I use less product, and I always brush it out just because I don’t really like the curl being too defined. When I’m in the process of getting my Jheri Curls in I use big rollers because I prefer going big than going too small. All in all its what works for you.

Oh dang! My mom had one but I never. Girl, I just can't see it. I tried activator on my hair when it was natural and I couldn't do it. I use Hawaiian Silky 14 n 1 b/c it doesn't have that scent.
