Protective Styles: Wigs for Relaxed, Transitioning, or Natural Hair

During my hair growth journey, there have been several key practices that have helped grow my hair to Hip Length.  One of the biggest healthy hair practices that I still do today is wearing protective styles.

Protective styles can take on several forms; however, I have two that I prefer are buns and wigs. I wear wigs mostly during fall and winter months to give an extra layer of protection from the elements. I also have tips on caring for your hair under a wig.

Protective Styles with Wigs: Collage of Wigs Worn

I wanted to share a few pictures of my favorite wigs that I’ve worn over the years. I originally started wearing wigs when I was natural and in most of the pictures below I was still natural, but for a few, I was texlaxed. There are two that are missing from the pictures: Sonya by Freetress and Briona from Model Model. I do apologize but I don’t know the names of all of the wigs. My hope is that this post will give you some idea on style options for wigs that you may want to purchase in the future.

I love a good wig!

Why Wear A Wig Over Natural or Relaxed Hair?

The biggest advantage to wearing a wig while I was natural and still now is that it has allowed me to get to my scalp and hair to moisturize. I do not have as many single strand knots because my hair was stretched and not out rubbing on my clothing. Plus, wash-n-go’s and frequent shampoos are not a good idea during colder months. There is nothing worse than walking around with wet hair and it’s 30 degrees outside.

I have always had a love of wigs and it seems now there is not the stigma of wearing wigs and weaves that there was in previous years. I like to change my hair according to my mood and outfit. I have wigs that work for any outfit or occasion: dressed professionally, going out with friends, or just wearing jeans with a t-shirt.

What is your go-to protective style? Do you wear wigs?
